Obituary

Monroe Scott Williamson, known to all as Scott, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2025, at the age of 84.

Born on November 7, 1940, in Sanford, North Carolina to Mildred (Mimi) and Harold (Buck) Williamson. Scott lived a full life providing for his family and supporting friends and loved ones.

A graduate of Sanford Central High School Yellow Jackets in Sanford, North Carolina, Scott was an All-State basketball player whose team won the NC state 2A championship in 1959. He was a graduate of Duke University where he was awarded an academic scholarship and went on to play basketball  from 1959 to 1963. He was a member of Duke's first Final Four team in 1963. His passion for the sport never faded; Scott continued to play competitively in the Tarboro rec league and then later as a senior. He helped lead his teams to victory in multiple world and continental FIMBA championships playing in the Czech Republic, Finland, Greece, Chile and Brazil to name a few. He was also a phenomenal rec league softball player, remembered by many. Legend has it he hit a softball further than anyone has to this day in Tarboro's Sunset Park.

To the neighborhood kids, he was "Stump" or "Twig". Scott would shoot hoops with anyone who asked; teaching the kids about basketball and healthy competition.

Scott built a distinguished career in purchasing and supply chain management. He moved the family to Tarboro, NC in 1972 to work at Black and Decker. While there he played a key role bringing innovative products like the Dust Buster and cordless screwdriver to market. The family were test subjects for all the prototypes. He went on to work at Long Manufacturing and eventually retired from Ilco Unican.

He kept his sharp mind active daily often solving puzzles including the New York Times Wordle. His final wordle was "blink", solved in four tries. Although ironically it took him six tries to guess "stump" a few days earlier.

He had a love of listening to rock 'n' roll music and reading science fiction. His favorite artists were Hendrix, Metallica, Skynyrd, and books were the Dune and 3 Body Problem series.

Scott was preceded in death by his partner, Myra McCall, parents Mimi and Buck Williamson. He is survived by his previous wife Carlanne Foushee and their children, Melissa, Matt, and Christine Williamson (wife of Matt). Along with his brother Richard Williamson, his wife Nancy, nephew Mark, his wife Joy and niece Angie Mullis.

Celebrations Of Life will be held on later dates at various locations special to Scott.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Heart Association or the V Foundation in Scott's memory.

Final rites and professional arrangements are entrusted to Matthews Family Mortuary.
