About Our Funeral Home and Our Commitment to You
The vision for Matthews Family Mortuary began forming for Crystal Matthews in the early 2000s. After finishing school at Tarboro High, she followed her calling into funeral service and became a Licensed Funeral Director in 2005. Over the years, her experience and commitment to helping families inspired her to imagine creating a place of her own—one that reflected her values and her approach to care.

On October 16, 2017, the North Carolina Board of Funeral Service completed its inspection and Matthews Family Mortuary officially opened its doors. That evening, the team gathered for an orientation and shared meal at Greater Joy Church on Anderson Street. Shortly after opening, in November 2017, Reverend Dr. James R. Davis of Bread of Life Christian Church and Community Center visited Crystal seeking support for his family after the passing of his nephew, Bobby Peele. After speaking with his wife, the family chose Matthews Family Mortuary to walk with them through that time. They became the first family ever served by the new funeral home.
