Traditional Services

Whether you choose burial or cremation, a funeral service is an important part of honoring your loved one and starting the healing process. We offer service options that are meaningful and affordable.

Cremation Services

We offer several service options for families that choose cremation, which can include a full-service funeral, a memorial service, or something more private, as well as permanent resting place options for the cremated remains.

Personalization

Our funeral directors are experts in helping to create meaningful services that are unique and honor your loved one in ways that are special and meaningful. We offer several ways to personalize a service, from tribute videos to keepsakes, to live streaming for family and friends who cannot attend in person.

Veterans Services

There is no greater honor than serving those who have served our country. We help you get the benefits and provide a service worthy of a veteran.

When planning a ceremony, you’ll find many options available, and we’re here to help you create something meaningful, respectful, and true to your loved one’s memory. Whatever you choose, we can provide a setting where family and friends can gather for comfort, reflection, and support. Above all, our goal is to honor your loved one in a way that feels right to you. We’re happy to walk you through the choices and answer any questions along the way.

Funeral Service

A funeral service gives family and friends the chance to come together, offer support, and celebrate a life lived. Whether your plans involve burial or cremation, you may hold a funeral that reflects your loved one’s story and traditions. We can help you arrange a classic, familiar service or something entirely personal. Many cultural and religious customs can be incorporated, and we will gladly assist in honoring these practices. This is your family’s moment, and we are privileged to help you shape it.

Memorial or Graveside Service

A memorial service serves as a dedicated time to remember and honor your loved one. It may take place soon after the death or at a later date, with or without the urn present. What matters most is creating a space for loved ones to gather, share memories, and support each other. Memorial services can be held at our funeral home, a cemetery, a place of worship, or even in the family home—wherever feels most comforting.

Burial or Entombment

If you prefer burial, there are several ways this can be arranged. You may choose a simple burial without a public gathering, or include a visitation, viewing, or wake. Services can be hosted at our funeral home, in a church, at a private residence, or at the graveside. You have complete flexibility to make the service public, private, or a combination of both. Your choices will reflect how you wish to honor and remember your loved one.

Cremation Before or After a Service

Families choose cremation for many different reasons, and there are numerous ways it can be incorporated into a remembrance ceremony. Today, cremated remains may be scattered, placed in an urn, displayed at home, fashioned into keepsake jewelry, or buried—in a plot or even alongside another family member. You have a wide range of choices when planning a cremation service, and we’re here to guide you through each step with clarity and care.

Domestic and International Transportation

If your loved one needs to be transported to another state or country, our staff can coordinate every detail with one phone call. We work closely with the funeral home of your choosing at the destination to ensure the process is smooth and respectful. Transporting a loved one requires careful attention, and we make sure you remain informed and involved throughout.

Veteran Funeral Honors

Individuals who were honorably discharged from any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces may qualify for specific benefits, including a burial flag, an optional honor ceremony, and a government-provided headstone. With the proper documents, we can help you secure these benefits and guide you through each step of the process. If you’re planning ahead, we can also assist you in learning about options available in advance.

Direct Cremation

Cremation costs at Matthews Family Mortuary vary depending on the type of service chosen. The simplest and most affordable option is a direct cremation, which involves the cremation process without a ceremony. This package typically includes all essential items needed for the disposition.

Catering for the Repast

A repast is often held after the service as a time for family and friends to gather, share memories, and find comfort over a meal. We are honored to assist families with this gathering. Our trusted catering partner serves the Nash, Edgecombe, and Halifax communities and brings years of experience and professionalism. Whether you prefer a simple drop-off meal or full-service catering, they can customize your menu to fit your preferences. Meals are delivered hot and ready to enjoy. A sample menu includes rice with gravy, baked or fried chicken, green beans, candied yams, hush puppies or rolls, tea, lemonade, and bottled water.
